Mathew Street Meanderings

“Don’t be long, okay?” I was standing outside Izzy’s apartment building, watching her fumbling in her bag for the door keys. She finally waggled them triumphantly at me.

“See,” she said, “I hadn’t lost them at all!” She opened the door, just as a lanky boy wearing dungarees and an orange and yellow striped jumper was about to push it from the inside. He almost fell over her and stumbled his way down the steps, before loping off with a wave and a vague, ‘Cheers, love,’ in her general direction. Izzy sighed. “Standards are slipping.”

“Even further?”

She pulled a face at me. “It’s cheap,” she said as she stepped inside, “and it’s central. Who’d keep an eye on you if I didn’t live close by?”

“I seem to be having quite the unexpected adventure, even so.”

Izzy grinned. “You’ll be fine,” she said. “I’ll be back at yours in an hour or so—just wander round for a bit and get used to things. Try not to scare anyone.” We’d agreed that Izzy would stay with me for another night or two, to help me figure things out a bit. If nothing else, she’d promised to practise walking around town with me until I’d managed to regulate my speed. Human steps seemed so slow and lumbering now that it felt comical attempting to slow myself down in order to not stand out in public. Even just the short walk from Flora’s to Izzy’s place had involved me accidentally terrifying a group of students w ho’d been huddled behind the giant metal pillar on the corner. I’d decided on the spur of the moment to see whether I could climb it. Despite its smooth sides, it was the easiest thing in the world to scramble upwards like an oversized monkey. I’d then performed a particularly spectacular dismount, swinging round and down whilst holding on with a single hand. Which is how I very nearly landed feet-first in the face of the teenage girl who was trying to light a suspiciously herbal-scented roll-up on the opposite side. There was a lot of shrieking and even more apologising as I landed on the ground and tried to make sure she was okay, whilst her friends gathered round, shouting at me. Izzy had intervened, informing them she was really sorry, but I had ‘issues’ and she had been taking me out for some air. She promised she would absolutely learn from her mistakes and ensure she had back up next time. We’d skulked the rest of our journey in a sedate manner, with the girls’ sympathetic sighs and mutterings audible behind us.

I watched Izzy go inside and shut the door, before turning and heading through Rainford Square to Mathew Street. We’d planned this carefully. The idea was to give me a brief period on my own in a busy street, in order to see if I was capable of being around humans without getting into trouble. I’d put on the sunglasses that Izzy insisted would help—you’ll feel
